Customers often have questions about the unsightly growths that are occasionally found on their trees. Here are a few descriptions of these common growths.
Wounds::
Trees often receive minor to moderate injuries. These injuries trigger a compartmentalization of the wound and the tree forms a callus to compensate for it.
Burls::
Burls can be recognized by their distorted, ugly appearance. They are typically found on deciduous trees. No one cause has been singled out as giving rise to these growths but they are felt to typically occur in response to genetic wounds. Though unsightly, burls are not known to be harmful to the growth or longevity of the tree's overall health. They are often sought after by wood turners to create beautiful wooden bowls.
Witches' Broom::
Witches' Broom is found on woody plants. It occurs when the transference of a plant's growth hormone is interrupted. Insects, fungi, bacteria, and herbicides have all been blamed for this nuisance. The application of glyphosate, found in Round-Up, late in the season can also cause witches' brooms on new plants in the following spring.
Lichens::
Lichens are a common for of plant life that are typically blue-green in color. They often grow on the bark of the trunk of a tree. Lichens thrive in sunlight. Scientific research indicates that although lichens can cover a significant area of a tree trunk, they are merely superficial and do not pose any threat to the tree.
Gypsy Moths and other Pests::
It is often difficult to determine the extent to which a seasonal population of gypsy moths will grow. Like the weather, predicting the size of a gypsy moth population months in advance is tough. That is why early comprehensive prevention is so important. Almost everyone has at least a few trees that could use protection to prevent damage.
If you do notice gypsy moths eating the leaves of your trees you should contact us immediately to come and spray the foliage or utilize trunk injections. However, the best defense against gypsy moth damage is to protect your property before you have a problem.
